We hope you all had a lovely break and are looking forward to the new term. This is an exciting time for you and your children with lots of changes ahead. We are a Nursery and Reception mixed class and we are pleased to report that all children both new and old have settled in nicely . We will be updating this page regularly with snapshots of our learning.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding any aspect of your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact me or come and see me at the end of the school day.
Our Autumn Topic is - Time Travellers - Dinosaurs
Termly Topic –This term our topic is ‘Dinosaurs’. This topic contains lots of opportunities for your child to learn about the past. Please see the attached medium-term planning overview for some examples of the learning that will be taking place. Further details of trips and visitors will be sent home later in the term. This terms home task is to create a dinosaur for our topic wall display. You can be as creative as you wish 😊. We look forward to seeing your creations – Happy Creating.
This week we have been busy learning about Remembrance day and making poppy wreaths to remember those who died in the war. We also took part in Anti bullying week and now know what bullying is and who we should tell. We talked about the Friendship Stops on both of our yards and talked about why we had them. We marked Kindness day by thinking of something kind to say to our friends and playing games together. We finished off the week by taking part in Children in Need. Please continue to read at home with your child and help them learn their parts for our Christmas concert. Any questions please ask.
We have had a busy first week back as you can see from our pictures. We also had a fantastic trip to Cardiff museum where all of our children were impeccably behaved. Everyone has now had their parts for the Christmas concert. Any queries please ask.
What a busy first half-term as you can see from our pictures below😊. We have taken part in lots of exciting learning opportunities linked to the four core purposes such as:
an online reading of ‘Stay safe with Thomas’ reminding us to stay safe near railways, Macmillan coffee afternoon, Harvest festival at the church, watching a theatre performance of Treasure Island, finding dinosaur eggs and watching them hatch and meeting Sir Gareth Edwards and his wife Lady Maureen Edwards when they presented our NQA Healthy Schools Award.
Just a reminder that all children have access to the Oxford Owl online reading buddy to enable them to listen and share stories with their families at home in addition to their reading books.
We hope you all have a lovely half-term holiday and look forward to welcoming you back ready for another busy half-term including our school trip to the museum on Friday 8th November.
We have been exploring Oxford Online Reading Buddy in class. Please continue to explore this at home with your child to support their reading and understanding. All children have their passwords inside their reading records. Any questions please ask.
Class 1 children and staff would like to thank parents for their fantastic dinosaur creations. They all look amazing! 😀
This terms home task is to create a dinosaur for our topic wall. You can be as creative as you wish. Could you please send these tasks in no later than the 1st October so that the children can share them with their peers. Any questions please ask.
Both power points that were shared in the Foundation Phase meeting on Thursday 19th September have now been added to the parents section of our website .
Here are a few reminders of our class routines to make the transition back to school go as smoothly as possible.
School day – The school bell will be rung at 8.55am and the gate will be open from 8.50am. In wet or very cold weather, the children may be invited into school from 8.45am. Children will then be dismissed at 3:30.
Spare underwear/uniform – The majority of children will have accidents at some point during the school day/year. There can be several reasons for this from not getting to the toilet on time to adventurous water play. Therefore, can you please ensure that your child has spare clothes to change into with their name clearly labelled on them.
Name Labels – Can you please ensure that all items of clothing and belongings including bags, shoes, PD kits, hats, fruit tubs and water bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Water bottle and Fruit – Children will need a healthy fruit snack for first break and a bottle of water every day. We do not allow squash, flavoured water or fruit juices as we are a healthy school. Please ensure that the bottle can be refilled so that we can top it up if needed throughout the school day.
Reading Books – Engaging children through stories and sharing books is an essential part of developing communication and language skills. Through stories children can express their own thoughts and emotions, learn new exciting words and build the foundations for language development. We do not have a set day for reading so please ensure that your child has their reading book in school every day. It is important that your child reads at home every day to develop accuracy and fluency in addition to having stories read to them. When reading with your child at home, please record their progress in their reading diaries. Please also practise the list of Read Write Inc sounds with your child. These are hugely important and will benefit your child’s reading immensely. Your child also has an Oxford Reading Buddy password for you to use at home.
Spelling – Spelling words or sounds will be given out on a Thursday which will be tested on the following Thursday. These spellings will consist of High Frequency words, spelling patterns and/or Read Write Inc sounds which your child will then be able to use in their writing. Please help your child learn the words/sounds that are sent home. In addition to this Reception children will need to learn to read and spell all of the High Frequency words that are in the back of their reading records by the end of their Reception year.
Homework – Could you please send the homework books to school every day so that we can stick in any letters/information that we need to share with you. This will avoid letters getting lost in bags. A homework grid will be placed inside their homework books at the beginning of every term for your child to complete over the term.
PD – PD kit consists of a pair of dark coloured shorts and a white or house coloured t-shirt and should be in a bag that your child can leave on their peg. We have written the colour house t-shirt your child would need inside their reading record. PD kits should be left in school until the end of term so that they are readily available. Please help your child to practise putting on and taking off their shoes and socks. Please also ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on all items.
All Weathers– Being part of Foundation Phase means that we are outdoors regardless of the weather. Please can you bring in a pair of wellies for your child so that we are able to explore the outdoors ensuring that your child’s name is inside each wellington. Due to the unpredictability of the Welsh weather can you please also ensure that your child has sun cream in their bags.
Show and Tell – Show and Tell sessions will take place on Friday afternoons. All children will be encouraged to share something special or important with their friends. This could be a certificate, some important family news, something they have done/enjoyed from the previous week or their plans for the weekend.
Numeracy – Our school follows the Abacus Maths and Big Maths Schemes. Please encourage your child to count at every opportunity including matching the correct number of objects to the numeral wherever possible whilst discussing the concept of one more/less. Please support your child by offering them opportunities to count forwards and backwards up to 5/10, 10/20 and then 50/100 from different starting points e.g. 49,50, 52 or 20,19,18. Reception children will also need to be able to count in 2s, 5s and 10s Please also support your child by ensuring that they are using the correct number formation where ever possible.
Handwriting – We practise our handwriting using a variety of mediums both inside and outside the classroom. Please allow your child to write at every opportunity outside school ensuring that they use the correct letter formations. Please also support your child by helping them to learn how to write their name correctly using the correct letter formations. Reception children need to be able to write their surnames too.
Active Travel – We are an Active Travel/Bike it school. If your child wishes to ride their bikes or scooters to school, we have racks where they can be stored so that they can also be used at breaktimes provided they have a helmet. Reception children will need to take their scooters to the storage on the top yard in the mornings before coming into class and can collect them at the end of the school day to ensure that they have access to them at breaktimes.
Class Mascots – We love reading about the adventures of our class mascot Gerry the Giraffe 😊. If your child has Gerry for the weekend, please ensure that he is returned to school no later than the following Wednesday so that he can be prepared ready for his next adventure. We will also be continuing to send home Shaun the sheep, our Crew Cymraeg mascot. Shaun will be sent home on a Tuesday and should be returned the following Monday ready for our whole school Crew Cymraeg assembly.
Behaviour - We use Class Dojos as a positive behaviour award tool throughout the school. Children can be awarded points for a variety of reasons, but they can also lose points too. The Dojos are reset every Monday so that each week is a fresh start. The child with the most Dojos on a Friday gets to take the class mascot home for the weekend. In addition to this, once a child hits 10 points they will receive an instant prize from the class prize box.
Birthdays -We will celebrate your childs’ birthday in class, but we do not allow birthday cakes/sweets etc. to share as we are a healthy school. You are however welcome to send in fruit to share if you wish.

Half Termly Update- Autumn Term 1 2018 (23/10/18)
We are so pleased and proud of how all of our children have settled into Class 1 😊. They are all superstars! Bendigedig!
What a busy half term! We have been busy taking part in numerous activities both inside and outside the classroom as you can see from some of our pictures. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in enhancing our children’s learning by contributing to the class tasks and activities. We are all enjoying our topic ‘All About Me!’ especially looking at our baby photographs and loved the visit from baby Quinn! We have also loved exploring Autumn and Harvest and all activities associated with it especially filling our parents cars with different coloured shaped/sized leaves 😊.
During Numeracy, we have been focusing on counting along with developing our understanding of 1-1 correspondence of numbers in addition to sequencing/repeated patterns and 2D shapes. During our Literacy/Read Write Inc sessions we have been busy learning our sounds using Fred Talk and Fred Fingers to help us to start to blend and spell. We have also been working on writing our names making sure that we start our letters from the correct starting point. Finally, we are ending our first busy half term with our debut performance at the Harvest Festival on Friday – we hope that you can join us.
As we approach the next busy half-term, please continue to ensure that your child has their reading book and diary in school every day so that we can read with them. Can you please comment in their diary too so that we know that they have read/ shared the book at home. Please also continue to ensure that they have their homework books in their bags so that we can stick letters/information in along with their spelling books.
Any queries, please do not hesitate to speak to us at the end of the school day.
