Croeso i Dosbarth 1!
Welcome to Class 1!
Mrs John - Class Teacher
Mrs Owens - Learning Support Officer
Miss David - Learning Support Officer
Mrs Vigus - Class Helper
We hope you had a lovely Easter break and are looking forward to the new term. We have put together some reminders to help things go as smoothly as possible.
School day – The school bell will be rung at 8.55am and the gate will be open from 8.50am. In wet or very cold weather, the children may be invited into school from 8.45am. Children will then be dismissed at 3:30.
Forest School Sessions - Reception and full time nursery children will be participating in forest school sessions - a letter will be sent home confirming the dates.
Spare underwear/uniform – The majority of children will have accidents at some point during the school day/year. There can be several reasons for this from not getting to the toilet on time to adventurous water play. Therefore, can you please ensure that your child has spare clothes to change into with their name clearly labelled on them.
Name Labels – Can you please ensure that all items of clothing and belongings including bags, shoes, PD kits, fruit tubs and water bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Water bottle and Fruit – Your child will need a healthy fruit snack for first break and a bottle of water every day. We do not allow squash, flavoured water or fruit juices as we are a healthy school. Please ensure that the bottle can be refilled so that we can top it up if needed throughout the school day.
Termly Topic –This term our topic is ‘Explorers at the Seaside’. This topic contains lots of opportunities for your child to learn about the seaside. Please see medium-term planning overview below for some examples of the learning that will be taking place. Further details of trips and visitors will be sent home later in the term. This terms home task is to create something that could be found on the beach, in the sea or at the seaside out of recycled materials, as we are a Platinum Eco school, for our topic wall display. You can be as creative as you wish 😊. We look forward to seeing your creations – Happy Creating.
Reading Books – Engaging children through stories and sharing books is an essential part of developing communication and language skills. Through stories children can express their own thoughts and emotions, learn new exciting words and build the foundations for language development. We do not have a set day for reading so please ensure that your child has their reading book in school every day. It is important that your child reads at home every day to develop accuracy and fluency in addition to having stories read to them. When reading with your child at home, please record their progress in their reading diaries. Please also practice the list of Read Write Inc sounds with your child. These are hugely important and will benefit your child’s reading immensely.
Spelling – Children will continue to be given spelling words on a Thursday which will be tested on the following Thursday. These spellings will consist of High Frequency words and/or Read Write Inc sounds which your child will then be able to use in their writing. Please help your child learn the words/sounds that are sent home in addition to the High Frequency words that are in the back of reception children's reading records.
Homework – Children will continue to be given a short piece of homework in addition to practicing their reading and sounds. This homework will continue to take on a number of forms from completing a worksheet to exploring Purple Mash to trying something new. A note will be stuck into their homework book informing you of the format. Their homework will be sent home on a Monday and should be completed by the following Monday. It is important that we have the homework books in school every day, so that we can stick in any letters/information that we need to share with you. This will avoid letters getting lost in bags. Purple Mash login details along with HWB passwords have been stuck inside your child’s reading record. Please feel free to log in and explore!
PD – PD kit consists of shorts and a t-shirt and should be in a bag that your child can leave on their peg. PD kits should continue to be left in school until the end of term so that they are readily available. Please help your child to practice putting on and taking off their shoes and socks. Please also ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on all items.
All Weathers– Being part of Foundation Phase means that we are outdoors regardless of the weather. Please can you bring in a pair of wellies for your child so that we are able to explore the outdoors ensuring that your child’s name is inside each wellington. Due to the unpredictability of the Welsh weather can you please also ensure that your child has sun cream in their bags – hopefully we will need it this term 😊.
Show and Tell – Show and Tell sessions will continue to take place on Friday afternoons. All children will be encouraged to share something special or important with their friends. This could be a certificate, some important family news, something they have done the previous week or their plans for the weekend.
Numeracy – We will continue to follow the Abacus Maths and Big Maths Schemes. Please continue to encourage your child to count at every opportunity including matching the correct number of objects to the numeral wherever possible whilst discussing the concept of one more/less. Please support your child by offering them opportunities to count forwards and backwards up to 10/20 and then 50/100 from different starting points e.g. 49,50, 52 or 20,19,18. Reception children will also need to be able to count in 2s, 5s and 10s Please also support your child by ensuring that they are using the correct number formation where ever possible.
Handwriting – We will continue to practice our handwriting using a variety of mediums both inside and outside the classroom. Please allow your child to write at every opportunity outside school ensuring that they use the correct letter formations. Please also support your child by helping them to learn how to write their name correctly using the correct letter formations. Reception children now need to write
Class Mascots – We love reading about the adventures of our class mascot Gerry the Giraffe 😊. If your child has Gerry for the weekend, please ensure that he is returned to school no later than the following Wednesday so that he can be prepared ready for his next adventure. We will also be continuing to send home Shaun the sheep, our Crew Cymraeg mascot. Shaun will be sent home on a Tuesday and should be returned the following Tuesday ready for our whole school Crew Cymraeg assembly.
Birthdays -We will celebrate your child's birthday in class, but we do not allow birthday cakes/sweets etc. to share as we are a healthy school.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding any aspect of your child’s education, please do not hesitate to speak to us.

This term our topic is ‘I went to the Zoopermarket’. This topic contains lots of opportunities for your child to learn about new foods and animals. Please see the medium-term planning overview below for some examples of the learning that will be taking place. Further details of trips and visitors will be sent home later in the term. This terms home task is to create a new food that is part animal for our topic wall display. You can be as creative as you wish 😊. We look forward to seeing your creations – Happy Creating.
Our Autumn Topic is 'All About Me!'
This topic contains lots of opportunities for your child to talk and learn about themselves. We will be looking at how they have grown and changed so they will need to bring in a baby photograph later in the term. A letter will be sent out later in the term about this. We will be visiting St Fagans to compare how people used to live with how people live today.
Please see overview below.
If you have any queries or have any concerns or issues regarding any aspect of your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact me or come and see me at the end of the school day - Mrs John.
Half Termly Update- Autumn Term 1 2018 (23/10/18)
We are so pleased and proud of how all of our children have settled into Class 1 😊. They are all superstars! Bendigedig!
What a busy half term! We have been busy taking part in numerous activities both inside and outside the classroom as you can see from some of our pictures. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in enhancing our children’s learning by contributing to the class tasks and activities. We are all enjoying our topic ‘All About Me!’ especially looking at our baby photographs and loved the visit from baby Quinn! We have also loved exploring Autumn and Harvest and all activities associated with it especially filling our parents cars with different coloured shaped/sized leaves 😊.
During Numeracy, we have been focusing on counting along with developing our understanding of 1-1 correspondence of numbers in addition to sequencing/repeated patterns and 2D shapes. During our Literacy/Read Write Inc sessions we have been busy learning our sounds using Fred Talk and Fred Fingers to help us to start to blend and spell. We have also been working on writing our names making sure that we start our letters from the correct starting point. Finally, we are ending our first busy half term with our debut performance at the Harvest Festival on Friday – we hope that you can join us.
As we approach the next busy half-term, please continue to ensure that your child has their reading book and diary in school every day so that we can read with them. Can you please comment in their diary too so that we know that they have read/ shared the book at home. Please also continue to ensure that they have their homework books in their bags so that we can stick letters/information in along with their spelling books.
Any queries, please do not hesitate to speak to us at the end of the school day.
