We have have put together some information to help the transition go as smoothly as possible, but should you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. We will keep you updated with changes as they occur throughout the term.

Our Autumn Topic is - All About Me - mind, body and soul.

This topic focuses on health and wellbeing and contains lots of opportunities for your child to learn about themselves, their family and their friends. Please see the medium-term planning overview below for some examples of the learning that will be taking place. This terms home task is to complete the ‘All about me!’ template which will be emailed to your child’s HWB account. This can then be emailed back to admin (school office) so that we can print them out and display them inside our classroom.

We do not allow squash, flavoured water or fruit juices, as we are a healthy school.  Please ensure that the bottle can be refilled so that we can top it up if needed throughout the afternoon and is clearly labelled. This bottle will need to be taken home at the end of the day.

Please see the attachment below showing you how to access Teams if you need to refer to it. If you have any problems accessing any of online platforms, please let us know.
  • Reading – Using your child’s Oxford Reading Buddy password, your child has access to hundreds of books from the reading scheme. It is important for your child to access this as we currently are unable to send any reading books home. Please use the reading record that you have been given to record your child’s progress as they use the online books at home. The reading diary should be kept at home until further notice.
  • Birthdays - We will celebrate your child’s birthday in class, but we do not allow birthday cakes/sweets etc. to share, as we are an accredited healthy school.   We also have a birthday Flip grid for your child to post about their special day.

Bore da pawb! Croeso/Welcome to week 10 of home learning. This week’s planning can be found on here and all resources can be found in the files section of our class Teams page. Reception children who do not have any new spelling words can continue to practice the ones that they found tricky and their high frequency words. These would be the children who were in Mrs Owens and Mrs O’Brien’s groups. If you are not sure please let me know. In addition to the planning there is also a Cardiff City (Bluebirds) resources page on here where there are extra activities for Early Years if you wish to use them.

You will have heard that we will be moving into a 'blended learning' approach from June 29th. This means there will be an opportunity for you all to come to school for a limited number of days during the last few weeks of term in addition to home distance learning. The school-based learning will be in 'bubbles' of groups of children with not everyone in at the same time. More information will be sent out as soon as it is available.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Due to the current situation around COVID-19 pupils may be working some of the next term remotely. In order to help parents and children with this we will be setting tasks to complete on their online platforms (such as Hwb, Abacus and Purple Mash) and also sending some work home in a Home Learning Pack. We will be uploading a timetable each week to direct you to the work that needs to be covered.

As a way of communicating with the whole class we will set up a Flipgrid page on Hwb and a class blog on Purple Mash. Details of how to access these resources will be included in the Home Learning Packs along with teacher email.

We absolutely appreciate that this is going to be a difficult time for everyone, and will support parents and children as best we can remotely. If you require further clarification about tasks set, pupils can email their class teacher using their Hwb email addresses. We politely request that these email addresses are not used for any other reason, we will however be monitoring our admin.coychurch@bridgend.gov.uk email address to deal with any important enquiries.

What a busy week! Sid the alien arrived from space on Monday with a list of things he wanted to find out. He brought some pictures of his friends and asked us which one we thought looked the friendliest. We made a pictogram to show our thoughts. We also taught Sid about staying safe online and thought about how unkind words made us feel. We showed Sid ways that we communicate including landlines, mobile phones and emails. We then took turns to use Stop Motion to make a video of our classroom. Once it was finished we decided to use iMovie to add our voices. Please see our video and pictures below.

Thank you for your support this half-term. Just a reminder that it is our school Eisteddfod on Wednesday 26th February.

Have a lovely half-term break :).

6/2/2020

We wanted to know whether aliens had teeth and if they had teeth were they the same as ours. To answer this question we asked our friends what they thought and made different graphs together to show our answers. We then thought about what was good and bad for our teeth. To answer this we decided to carry out an experiment using boiled eggs, vinegar, cola, water and milk. The children enjoyed working through this experiment as you can see from the pictures below. They were all shocked that the egg that had been in vinegar had become soft and when they tried to clean it with a toothbrush the shell had disappeared!

30/1/2020

This week we have been celebrating Active Travel Week and have been discussing ways to stay safe when using our bikes and scooters.  We had great fun designing helmets and riding our bikes and scooters throughout the day.

The children were so good singing their class song for the whole school and visitors at our special celebration assembly that Mrs Hurry awarded all of class one with the head teachers award :).

23/1/2020

This week we have been learning about St Dwynwen. We found out that St Dwynwen's day will be celebrated on the 25th January and is a Welsh Valentine's day. We also found out that this Chinese New Year will also be celebrated on the 25th January and is the year of the rat. We have been busy completing activities around this topic including finishing off the week with a class made Chinese dance.

The home tasks look amazing on our topic wall - the children are very proud and have enjoyed talking about them! Please can any remaining home tasks be sent in by Monday 27th January so that the children can share them with their peers.

Don't forget next week is Active Travel week. For more information please refer to the letters that have been sent home.

16/1/2020

This week we have been busy working on our number bonds to 5 and 10 and our number formations.  Please continue to practice these at home because the children are finding them tricky. We have also been taking part in NSPCC Pants lessons and reminded ourselves and our friends that Pants are Private. We finished off the session with the Pantosaurus song.

The children have enjoyed sharing their home task creations with their friends so please continue to send these in.

CLASS 1 ROUTINES

Here are a few reminders of our class routines to make the transition back to school go as smoothly as possible.

School day – The school bell will be rung at 8.55am and the gate will be open from 8.50am. In wet or very cold weather, the children may be invited into school from 8.45am. Children will then be dismissed at 3:30.

Spare underwear/uniform – The majority of children will have accidents at some point during the school day/year. There can be several reasons for this from not getting to the toilet on time to adventurous water play. Therefore, can you please ensure that your child has spare clothes to change into with their name clearly labelled on them.

Name Labels – Can you please ensure that all items of clothing and belongings including bags, shoes, PD kits, hats, fruit tubs and water bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Water bottle and Fruit – Children will need a healthy fruit snack for first break and a bottle of water every day. We do not allow squash, flavoured water or fruit juices as we are a healthy school. Please ensure that the bottle can be refilled so that we can top it up if needed throughout the school day.

Reading BooksEngaging children through stories and sharing books is an essential part of developing communication and language skills. Through stories children can express their own thoughts and emotions, learn new exciting words and build the foundations for language development.  We do not have a set day for reading so please ensure that your child has their reading book in school every day. It is important that your child reads at home every day to develop accuracy and fluency in addition to having stories read to them. When reading with your child at home, please record their progress in their reading diaries.  Please also practise the list of Read Write Inc sounds with your child. These are hugely important and will benefit your child’s reading immensely. Your child also has an  Oxford Reading Buddy password for you to use at home.

Spelling – Spelling words or sounds will be given out on a Thursday which will be tested on the following Thursday. These spellings will consist of High Frequency words, spelling patterns and/or Read Write Inc sounds which your child will then be able to use in their writing. Please help your child learn the words/sounds that are sent home. In addition to this Reception children will need to learn to read and spell all of the High Frequency words that are in the back of their reading records by the end of their Reception year.

Homework –  Could you please send the homework books to school every day so that we can stick in any letters/information that we need to share with you. This will avoid letters getting lost in bags. A homework grid will be placed inside their homework books at the beginning of every term for your child to complete over the term. Please record your child's progress in their homework book as they complete the challenges.

PD – PD kit consists of a pair of dark coloured shorts and a white or house coloured t-shirt and should be in a bag that your child can leave on their peg. We have written the colour house t-shirt your child would need inside their reading record. PD kits should be left in school until the end of term so that they are readily available. Please help your child to practise putting on and taking off their shoes and socks. Please also ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on all items.

All Weathers– Being part of Foundation Phase means that we are outdoors regardless of the weather. Please can you bring in a pair of wellies for your child so that we are able to explore the outdoors ensuring that your child’s name is inside each wellington. Due to the unpredictability of the Welsh weather can you please also ensure that your child has sun cream in their bags.

Show and Tell – Show and Tell sessions will take place on Friday afternoons. All children will be encouraged to share something special or important with their friends. This could be a certificate, some important family news, something they have done/enjoyed from the previous week or their plans for the weekend.

Numeracy – Our school follows the Abacus Maths and Big Maths Schemes. Please encourage your child to count at every opportunity including matching the correct number of objects to the numeral wherever possible whilst discussing the concept of one more/less. Please support your child by offering them opportunities to count forwards and backwards up to 5/10, 10/20 and then 50/100 from different starting points e.g. 49,50, 52 or 20,19,18. Reception children will also need to be able to count in 2s, 5s and 10s Please also support your child by ensuring that they are using the correct number formation where ever possible.

Handwriting – We  practise our handwriting using a variety of mediums both inside and outside the classroom. Please allow your child to write at every opportunity outside school ensuring that they use the correct letter formations. Please also support your child by helping them to learn how to write their name correctly using the correct letter formations. Reception children need to be able to write their surnames too.

Active Travel – We are an Active Travel/Bike it school. If your child wishes to ride their bikes or scooters to school, we have racks where they can be stored so that they can also be used at breaktimes provided they have a helmet. Reception children will need to take their scooters to the storage on the top yard in the mornings before coming into class and can collect them at the end of the school day to ensure that they have access to them at breaktimes.

Class Mascots We love reading about the adventures of our class mascot Gerry the Giraffe 😊. If your child has Gerry for the weekend, please ensure that he is returned to school no later than the following Wednesday so that he can be prepared ready for his next adventure. We will also be continuing to send home Shaun the sheep, our Crew Cymraeg mascot. Shaun will be sent home on a Tuesday and should be returned the following Monday ready for our whole school Crew Cymraeg assembly.

Behaviour - We use Class Dojos as a positive behaviour award tool throughout the school. Children can be awarded points for a variety of reasons, but they can also lose points too. The Dojos are reset every Monday so that each week is a fresh start. The child with the most Dojos on a Friday gets to take the class mascot home for the weekend. In addition to this, once a child hits 10 points they will receive an instant prize from the class prize box.

Birthdays -We will celebrate your childs’ birthday in class, but we do not allow birthday cakes/sweets etc. to share as we are a healthy school. You are however welcome to send in fruit to share if you wish.

  AUTUMN TERM 2019 UPDATES

20/12/19

After a busy term we finished off with a joint party with class 2 in the hall. We all enjoyed playing party games such as musical statues and pass the parcel.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for your support this term. We would also like to thank you all for your kind gifts. We wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a healthy happy 2020!

12/12/19

What another busy week! We are so proud of all of our children performing in their Christmas production of 'A Little Nativity'. Each and every one of them were superstars! Thank you all so much for helping them learn their lines and for sending in their costumes.

Sam the elf has been up to all sorts of tricks this week too. He decorated our class Christmas tree with pants, played with our toys and had snowball fights in our classroom after we had gone home!

We have also been busy completing Christmas challenges and are looking forward to going to see Snow White tomorrow.

6/12/19

This week started with Sam the elf joining our class. We found a video of Sam and Santa's reindeer's dancing in our classroom! We have also been busy practising for our concert and the children were amazing in their dress rehearsal performance for the whole school. Thank you so much for sending in their fantastic costumes and we are looking forward to sharing our concert with you next week smiley.

28/11/19

This week we have been focusing on measuring using non standard measures. We had to measure dinosaurs and our feet using cubes. We then had to find out which of our friends had the biggest feet and think about whether they had bigger feet than a T-Rex.  We have also used our numeracy skills cross curricular when we took part in Switch off Fortnight. We talked about the importance of not leaving items on stand by and switching off lights when we leave rooms. We also sorted rubbish into a pile that could be recycled and a pile that could not. We then sorted the items by their materials and then looked at whether they were healthy or unhealthy foods.  We counted the items and learned how to make a tally chart before we made a pictogram as a class. We have been working so hard that we received a letter from Santa telling us that he will be sending one of his elves to stay next week. We are very excited smiley

We have also started practising our Christmas concert on the stage so please continue to practice lines at home. Please send costumes in by Monday 2nd December ready for our dress rehearsal. Please also continue to read at home with your child and explore the Oxford Online reading Buddy. Any questions, please ask.

21/11/19

This week we have been focusing on money - 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins. We have been using these coins daily throughout our play. We have also started practising our lines for our Christmas concert. They are all doing amazing but please continue to practice them. Please also continue to read at home with your child and explore the Oxford Online reading Buddy.

15/11/19

This week we have been busy learning about Remembrance day and making poppy wreaths to remember those who died in the war. We also took part in Anti bullying week and now know what bullying is and who we should tell. We talked about the Friendship Stops on both of our yards and talked about why we had them. We marked Kindness day by thinking of something kind to say to our friends and playing games together. We finished off the week by taking part in Children in Need. Please continue to read at home with your child and help them learn their parts for our Christmas concert. Any questions please ask.

8/11/19

We have had a busy first week back as you can see from our pictures. We also had a fantastic trip to Cardiff museum where all of our children were impeccably behaved. Everyone has now had their parts for the Christmas concert. Any queries please ask.
